Teaching about Baptisms

The Doctrine of Baptisms

The word ‘doctine’ means teaching. The writer of the Book of Hebrews talks about “the teaching of baptisms” (Heb 6:2) as one of the principles to go on to perfection in the spiritual life of a believer. Note the word ‘baptisms’ which is pluralistic in nature, thus indicating more than one baptism to be present in the scripture as a doctrine to be learned . In this article we will find out the various types of baptism, all of which points to “…one baptism;” (Eph 4:5), which is ‘the baptism of Jesus’ that centrally connects all other baptisms. Baptism mainly points to the purification from sins that one will experience through knowing it and living by faith in it. The result will be a good conscience that we will be able to experience in our daily lives.

 

(a) John’s Baptism

In those days the Jews baptized the Gentile convert for purification to become a proselyte Jew (John 3:25), but John insisted that whether a Jew or a Gentile, everybody need to be baptized (Luke 3:3, 7, 8) . This was the reason they were questioning him about his authority to baptize people (John 1:19, 24-25). In the early chapters of the four Gospels and in
Acts 1:5; Acts 11:16; Acts 19:4, it [the word ‘baptizo’-“to baptize”] is used of the rite performed by John the Baptist who called upon the people to repent that they might receive remission of sins. Those who obeyed came “confessing their sins,” thus acknowledging their unfitness to be in the Messiah’s coming kingdom. Many lived by faith in the doctrine of John’s baptism (Acts 19:1-7; Matt 3:5-12). John also had disciples and taught them about praying and things about God and his ways (Matt 11:2; Luke 11:1).And some of the disciples who followed Jesus were formerly John’s disciples, when John the Baptist pointed to Jesus as the Son of God [Messiah the Christ] and the Lamb of God, they started following Jesus (John 1:34-42). John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, which is the first step to enter the kingdom of God (Luke 3:3; Matt 3:6; 11:12). It was God’s will for every one to get baptized by John and those who rejected John’s Baptism also rejected Jesus Christ (Luke 7:29-30).

(b) John Baptizes Jesus

John always pointed people to messiah who will come and baptize them with the Spirit (Matt 3:11). John also baptized Jesus to make Him be known to Israel as the perfect Lamb of God (Matt 3:15). It was at this point of time when Jesus became a sin for us when the God the Father placed on him the sin of the world and as he voluntarily gave himself for our cause, a divine exchange took place there (2 Cor 5:21; Isaiah 53:6; Matt 3:15, 17; John3:17). From there he carried our sins to the cross of Calvary (John 1: 29, 36; Isaiah 53:4 “Sorrows – effects or results of sin”; Matt 8:16-17; 16:21; Mark 10:38, 45; John 18:11). And even Jesus acknowledged that He was distressed until the baptism is fully accomplished on the cross for us and through His resurrection (Luke 12:50; Rom 6:3-6).

After Jesus was tempted in every way by Satan, coming out from the wilderness, Jesus was declared as the “lamb of God” (John 1:35-36), by John the Baptist. A perfect lamb will always be tested before it is announced as with out blemish. When Jesus was tested by God, He stood perfect in all the temptations till Satan had no more way to tempt Jesus and he left, showing that he cannot find even an iota of any imperfection (Matt 4:1, 11). John himself said, the reason he baptized people with water is to reveal Jesus the Messiah [Christ] as the Son of God and the Lamb of God to Israel. This he said when he was giving baptism beyond the Jordan at Bethany and not at the Jordan where Jesus was Baptized (John 1:29-34; Matt 3:13). Immediately after Jesus was Baptized He was led by the Spirit in to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Mark 1:12), and this clearly shows that John the Baptist declared Jesus as the Lamb of God not immediately after He baptized Jesus in the river Jordan, but only after He returned from the wilderness forty days later victoriously as the Lamb of God (Matt 4:1).

He declared Jesus as the Son of God because John heard the voice of God from heaven and saw the Spirit of God descending upon Jesus like a dove when He was baptized by him and when He came out of the wilderness after 40 days, still the Spirit of God remained upon Him testifying that He was the perfect lamb of God and John declared the Truth that he saw before his very eyes (John 1:33; Luke 4:14).

(c) The Spirit of God baptizes the believer in to that one body [universal body of Christ] when they are born again (1 Cor 12:13; 1 Peter 3:21; Col 2:12; Rom 6:4-5; 1 Tim 1:19 (c.f. Heb 10:14-18)).

(d) The believers will baptize a new believer in to the body of Christ.

 

 

This type of ‘baptism of identification with Christ’ started right after the baptism of Jesus which He received from John the Baptist. John the Apostle wrote about this in his Gospel where he says, “And they [i.e. the Jews] came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”….. Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), He left Judea and departed again to Galilee.” (John 3:26; 4:1-3; Matt 11:12).

It is done as a confessional testimony before every one that they [the new believer] have received Christ as his/her personal savior (Mark 16:6; Acts 2:38). This is the “baptism” enjoined by Christ, Matt 28:19, a “baptism” to be undergone by believers, thus witnessing to their identification with Him in death, burial and resurrection, e.g., Acts 19:5; Rom 6:3,4; 1 Cor 1:13-17; 1 Cor 12:13; Gal 3:27; Col 2:12. The phrase in Matt 28:19, “baptizing them into the Name” (RV; cp. Acts 8:16, RV), would indicate that the “baptized” person was closely bound to, or became the property of, the one into whose name he was “baptized.”

 

(e) Jesus baptizes the believer’s with the Holy Spirit

The Greek word for baptism is ‘baptizo’ which means ‘to get immersed or overwhelmed’. Jesus baptizes the believers with the Holy Spirit just as John the Baptist announced. This happened on the day of Pentecost after the ascension of Jesus and it has been happening ever since that day, and the outward sign or manifestation [of the inward work] is speaking in new tongues (Matt 3:11; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4-5,8; 2:1-4; 19:2-6).

Satanic Realities

Satan has no power to create, only God can create. Spiritist mediums do not communicate with the dead. Instead, they communicate with demon spirits who imitate those who have died (2 Cor 11:14).

Beside this we see in the Bible says, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,” (Heb 9:27). Here the Greek word that is used for ‘judgment’ is ‘krisis’ which when translated gives us the meaning sentence of condemnation, damnatory judgment, condemnation and punishment. And it also means a separating, sundering and separation. So according to the Bible a soul will go to the separated place of Sheol where the wicked souls of men are kept under sentence of condemnation. The Greek word for Hebrew word ‘sheol’ is ‘Hades’. Both mean the same here. This is what Jesus also affirmed in the real life story of ‘The Rich Man and Lazarus’ that happened in the Old Testament times. After he died his soul did not remain in the earth or in some other place to be consulted with, but was in torment in Hades (Luke 16:19-31; 2 Peter 2:17). The one difference that has happened in the New Testament is that the place where the righteous souls of men who were kept on the other side, with a great gulf between the wicked souls and righteous ones, were emptied when Jesus came to Sheol after His death on the cross and preached the gospel and took them to heaven with their resurrected bodies (1 Peter 3:18-20; 4:6; Eph 4:8-10; Matt27:52-53). But the wicked souls are still in torment, in the section where the wicked souls are kept for the final white throne Judgment. And still now the wicked souls of men are kept there after their death.

And God also says in his word “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezek 18:4). In the book of Ecclesiastes this is confirmed, when the Bible says, “Then [after one dies] the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Eccl 12:7). And also Jesus affirmed this saying, “And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” (Luke 12:4-5). From this above verse we can clearly understand that Satan has no right over any soul, whether wicked or righteous after death. Only God has the absolute right over the soul of every one after their physical death, so only He [i.e. Jesus] teaches every man to fear God. Satan has only rights to steal, kill, and destroy the body of any man physically because of sin in the flesh (John 10:10; Rom 7:17). But Satan cannot do this to believers (Rom 6:22), if only they will stand on the promises of redemption that Jesus Christ has achieved for them. In Deut 18:11, a necromancer is explained as ‘one who calls up the dead.’ Here a person who calls up the dead does not mean that he is calling up a dead spirit of a man. The Hebrew word that is used here for the ‘one who calls up the dead’ is ‘darash’ which means ‘to consult, enquire of, seek of heathen gods, necromancers, to seek deity in prayer and worship [i.e. heathen deities]. It does not in any way convey the meaning of inquiring a dead spirit of man.

Imagine a person being inhabited by a demon for years. On his death, this demon roams around in a disembodied state looking for another person who will not resist his efforts to gain entrance. This demon knows many intimate things that happened in the life of the departed person. If some medium is willing to communicate with this familiar spirit, naturally the spirit can stimulate the dead person and fool the assembled gullible gathering.

Many people also have misconceptions about haunted houses. Some think that the ghosts of departed people live in such houses, but it is not true. [Demons haunt houses and can cause thumps and bangs at any time of the night or day.]

Why is there such an increase in satanic activity?

Because people are departing from God and His word, and the vacuum created in the human spirit is being filled by “other spirits”.

“Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria [fleshly false religion]…” (Amos 6:1).

  • Angels of destruction -> Ps 78:49

  • Jude 6

  • The apostle Paul called him “the prince of the power of air” (Eph 2:2). Lucifer – “shining one” (Isaiah 14:12).

Lucifer did not lose his power or authority when he was cast out of heaven. By divine permission he uses it today among the earthly creation. His power, therefore, is second only to Jesus Christ [the beleivers are in Jesus Christ and so is greater than Satan himself] and is infinitely greater than many people imagine (Isaiah 14:13-17).

Wicked spirits

Christians must remember that Satan is neither omnipresent nor omniscient. His power is limited. In order to carry on his insidious work of maintaining curses upon the world, he uses a great company of wicked spirits, or fallen angels, to do his bidding. With out a doubt these wicked spirits are governed by well-disciplined angelic orders of generals and captains. We do not know the number of these wicked spirits. There seems little doubt that they are far more numerous than mankind (Matt 26:53; Mark 5:9).

They may even seek to reenter a body when the spirit of that person ceases to resist their forces (Matt 12:43, 45).

Who fills the empty space?

Either the Spirit of God or the spirit of Satan is the one who will fill the empty space. Man is triune; first he is a spirit, with a soul, in a body. Man is essentially a Spiritual being.

Although Satan can speak in tongues through a person, every one truly baptized in the Spirit can also speak in tongues as the Holy Spirit gives the utterance (See Acts 2:4). But how do we know the difference? To this Jesus gave the answer in Matt 7:16.

If a tongue speaking Christian does not manifest the fruit of the Spirit in his life, he must be suspect in the assembly.

How these people in Matthew 7:22-23 could cast out devils, prophecy and perform signs, wonders and miracles? Surely, like Judas Iscariot (John 12:6), they must have been in right relationship with God at one time. But what happened to them? They yielded to pride, power, avarice, lust and jealousy, and Jesus had no place for them in His kingdom (Matt 7:16). They will have other motives to follow Jesus and not because of love towards Him (Acts 8:18-24; 2 Peter 2:15, 16).

Calling the enemy by name


1) spirit of infirmity or weakness (Luke 13:11).

2) Mute spirit (Mark 9:25).

3) Dumb spirit (Mark 9:25).

4) Distressing spirit (1 Samuel 16:14).

[Distressing -> depressing (a feeling of sadness and loneliness with out hope)].

5) Foul spirit (Rev 18:2).

6) Unclean spirit (Matt 10:1).

7) spirit of divination (Acts 16:16).

8) spirit of bondage (Rom 8:15).

9) spirit of error (I John 4:6).

10) spirit of the world (1 Cor 2:12).

11) Deceiving spirits (1 Tim 4:1).

12) Jealous spirit (Num 5:14).

13) Lying spirit (2 Chronicles 18:21).

14) Familiar spirit (Deut 18:11).

15) spirit of antichrist (1 John 4:3).

16) spirit of fear (2 Tim 1:7).

17) Perverse spirit (Isaiah 29:10).

18) Sorrowful spirit (1 Sam 1:15).

19) spirit of harlotry (Hos 4:12).

20) Different spirit (2 Cor 11:4).

Sin no more

Deliverance is no way automatic. Keeping your freedom is dependant on maintaining a very close walk with God.

Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you (John 5:14). In other words Jesus was telling this man, don’t reject me other wise you have no other way for you get delivered.

We must remember that the ministry of deliverance needs faith. Some experimenting, unbelieving Jews experienced disastrous results when they tried to cast out demons by using the name of Jesus with out faith (Acts 19:13-16).

  • Ps 34:19

Who sends these afflictions?
Satan afflicted Job, but only with God’s permission. Apparently, persecution is one kind of demonic oppression that no Christian can avoid. But we need not be depressed about it.
Every Christian can claim an inner deliverance from demonic oppression – Paul obliviously had that kind of deliverance and was full of the joy of the Lord.

How to resist?

1 John 5:18 (John 3:3-5; John 1:12). To keep our self clean and spotless from the world is by thinking and practicing pure thoughts and by keeping ourselves consciously under the blood of Jesus. To keep our self clean we need the help of God, by our own strength we will only fail. That is why even the apostles of the lamb were taught by Jesus to pray to the Father like this “…Deliver us from the evil one…” (Luke 11:4; Matt 6:13).

  • 1 Peter 5:6, 8, 9

God actively opposes the proud (1 Peter 5:5). The real humble person is the one who knows that all things are possible with the strength of God acting through him. So only Paul says in Phil 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. With strength like that, the devil is a defeated foe!

You might as well face the fact that any part of your body can become a place [an opportunity for the devil to control your various members or you body parts (Rom 6:16; 12:1; 1 John 3:7; Rom 13:14).] for demon (Eph 4:27).A demon will take anything he can get!

‘…He who has been born of God keeps himself ‘ (1 John 5:18) means ‘Steady abstinence from the wickedness of the World’. This kind of person ‘the wicked one [i.e. the devil] does not touch him’ because the devil has no rights to touch him. The devil can touch a believers life only as much as they give room to him when they are tempted by the devil.

  • Exodus 20:5 – 80 to 100 years.

  • James 1:12-15 -> Conception – “the creation of a new life”. New demonic activity in him.
Categories of Demons (Eph 6:12)

1) Principalities.
2) Powers.
3) Rulers of the darkness of this age.
4) Wickedness in heavenly places.

Always command the demons to “Be quiet and come out” (Mark 1:25).

  • Deut 18:10-12

  • 1 Sam 28:7-19

  • Isaiah 8:19-20

Our goal is to cast out demons quickly, giving no place to them, and refusing to make any agreement with them at all. Every demon craves expression through a physical body (Matt 12:43).

  • Matt 28:18-19; Col 2:15; Luke 10:17 [Delegated authority].
  • The disciples were not able to cast out demons because of their unbelief, prayer and fasting will remove our unbelief and will infuse faith in a greater measure (Mark 9:38-39; Matt 17:14-21). Casting out demons is described as working a miracle by Jesus (Mark 9:38-39).
  • Matt 8:28-34; 25:41;

  • Authority – Luke 4:6

  • Authority over [not for]“To take dominion over” (James 5:14-15).

  • “those who believe” (Mark 16:17).

  • No other power can drive out demons (Mark 3:23-26).

  • “temporary hiding”. Demon -> daimon.Gr“an evil spirit”. Daimon, in turn comes from a root which means “a shadow”. Satan, the supreme commander of all demons, sends these evil spirits upon people to bring shadows- darkness- over the spirit of man.


  • Compulsive behavior.

  • Avoid backsliding.

  • 1 Cor 6:19-20; Mark 8:33; Luke 22:31-32; 2 Cor 2:11; 11:4

Corruption of the mind can happen by demonic invasion, if you don’t resist the evil thoughts and linger on it (1 Peter 5:8). Scripture indicates that a spirit can seduce a Christian (1 Tim 4:1).

He has no power over the one who keeps himself unspotted from the world, flesh and the devil (1 John 5:18).

  • Luke 13:11-13. She was a true believer (v16).
The presence of the Holy Spirit stirs up the other spirits that are in the hiding. They are forced in to the open by the Spirit of God, where they can be dealt with and cast out in Jesus’ Name.

Even though they were Spirit-filled Christians, that did not prevent Satan from filling their hearts (Acts 5:1-3).

  • Matt 7:16-17

The Holy Spirit brings forth holy fruit, but an evil spirit brings forth evil fruit. If a particular manifestation is good and glorifies Christ, we may be assured that the Holy Spirit is in control.

  • 2 Cor 12:7 – messenger of Satan was allowed by God to buffet Paul and this is the real thorn in the flesh. Messengerangellos.gr –“fallen angel”. Buffet –Struck, battered.

  • God permitted all these experiences of adversity because of the abundance of revelations given to Paul, to keep him humble.

  • The agent of this distress and woe was an angel of Satan- a powerful demon.

Role of Women in LIfe and Ministry !

Role of Women in Ministry

Women who played important roles in the New Testament

1) In the ministry of Jesus many women provided for the ministry financially (Luke 8:2-3).

2) Mary and Martha worshipped and served Jesus (Luke 10:38-42).

3) The disciples continued in prayer obeying the Lord’s Word to tarry (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; 1:14). Here in Acts 1st chapter, the Disciples continued with one accord in prayer and supplication along with the women (v8) [these women were also waiting to receive power to be a witness in all the earth like Mary the mother of Jesus and other’s like her who were closely associated with Jesus and who were His disciples].

4) God makes no difference in pouring out His Spirit upon all flesh [that includes all the women (Acts 2:17)]. God also says that as a result of pouring out His Spirit “Your sons and daughters shall prophecy…” which implies God Himself equally considers both His sons and daughters to be equal recipients of His Spirit.

5) But look visions and dreams are with authority and responsibility and it is of a higher order and it is given to individuals as He wills. They are not divine entertainment from God and it is only given to young men and old men [Note: It is gender specific as described in the Word of God]. These are leadership positions where authority is exercised over other men (v17).

6) To serve God with the gift that God has given is not gender specific, because He calls His servants as “My menservants…” and “maid servants” in Acts 2:18. The main work they will do equally with men for God is “prophecy” (1 Corinthians 11:5), but under the authority of the local minister of God who has been appointed by the Holy Spirit. The main area where they will minister [prophecy and teach] individually and collectively is more to women and can minister to the church as a whole in this area (Titus 2:4).

7) Here the Greek word used for ‘to teach and admonish to be sober or soberminded’ is sophroniz, which denotes “to cause to be of sound mind, to recall to one’s senses;” in Titus 2:4, RV, it is rendered “they may train” (AV, “they may teach … to be sober,” marg., “wise”); “train” expresses the meaning more adequately; the training would involve the cultivation of sound judgment and prudence.

8) To prophecy is to edify, exhort and comfort men [i.e. the church] (1 Cor 14:3). He who prophesies edifies the church (1 Cor 14:4). If apostle Paul did not want the women to speak at all in the church, he would have never instructed women in the church to cover their head while prophesying in the church (1 Cor 11:5). Here the Greek word used for prophesying is propheteuo, the same that which is used for men speaking forth Divine counsels of God in the church.

9) Propheteuo “to be a prophet, to prophesy,” is used with the primary meaning of telling forth the Divine counsels, e.g., Matt 7:22; Matt 26:68; 1 Cor 11:4,5; 1 Cor 13:9; 1 Cor 14:1, 3-5, 24, 31, 39; Rev 11:3; and of foretelling the future, e.g., Matt15:7; John11:51; 1Pet1:10; Jude 14.

Tabitha was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did by exercising her gifts of giving with liberality and showing mercy with cheerfulness (Acts 9:36; Romans 12:8). This gives us an idea that women are equally gifted in various things as men in the kingdom of God.

11) God was also moved equally by the prayers of the faithful women who prayed as a group. He moved on behalf of their prayers and intervened in Peter’s life by bringing him out from the prison (Acts 12:12-14). How do we know that women were involved in the prayer? Because it is mentioned in Verse 12 that Peter came to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark and the person who came out of the prayer group to open the door was a girl named Rhoda (v13).

12) Philip the evangelist had four virgin daughters’ who prophesied (Acts 21:9; 1 Cor 12:7-11). Here also the Greek word Propheteuo is used for the activity of ‘Prophesying’ that they did, implying that there is no difference in the content of message that came directly through Divine inspiration from God to the Church.

13) Paul wrote in His letter to the Romans about, “Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the Church in Cenchrea.”(Rom 16:1, 2). Here Apostle Paul himself calls Phoebe ‘a servant of the Church’. [Note: Paul is calling Phoebe a servant of the Church implying that she was an active participant in the life and service that the Church offered to people].

14) Junia was a Christian woman at Rome, mentioned by Paul as one of his kinsfolk and fellow prisoners along with Andronicus, who are of note among the Apostles (Rom 16:7). Paul says that both of them were in Christ before Paul himself which shows that they were elderly persons, seasoned and mature in the Lord for years. Here we see a woman apostle, and that too was noteworthy and stamped among the apostolic community. This shows that woman can be an apostle to the church, but should be very elderly and mature in their walk with the Lord not the young and novice women (Titus 2:3-6; 1Tim5;14).

15) Here Paul has used the Greek word sunaichmalotos for ‘fellow prisoners’ to describe Junia the woman apostle and Andronicus [a man apostle], which means “a fellow prisoner,” primarily “one of fellow captives in war” (from aichme, “a spear,” and haliskomai, “to be taken”), Rom 16:7; of Epaphras, Phm 1:23; of Aristarchus, Col 4:10, on which Lightfoot remarks that probably his relations with the Apostle in Rome excited suspicion and led to a temporary confinement, or that he voluntarily shared his captivity by living with him. Apostle Paul used the metaphor of a fellow prisoner to describe only those co-workers who worked with him and were sold out fully to Christ for proclaiming the good news as the sent one of God.

16) Paul also spoke about women serving and ministering in the work of the Church and to the Lord in 1 Cor 7th chapter 34 Verse, he says “…the unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord…” .In other words Paul was speaking about dedicated women workers who are sold out 100% like him to serve people with the word of God. This gives us an idea that women too served in the Churches in the first century in equal capacity if not less in any way with men.

Examples:

a) Pricilla was called by Paul as my fellow worker (v3). Greet Mary, who Paul says labored much for us (v6). Paul greets the beloved Persis who labored much in the Lord (v12). Paul greets Julia, Nereus [man] and his sister and at the end if this verse he asks the receiver of this letter to greet all the saints [i.e. both men and women in the Church] who were with them (v15). Paul never differentiates between them.

b)
At the end if the book of 1 Cor 16:19 Paul has written, “The Churches of Asia greet you, Aquila and Priscilla greet you heartily in the Lord, with the Church that is in their house.” Here Paul refers about the coworkers of Paul in their order of authority. Aquila the husband and then the wife Pricilla. This is divine order. Here Aquila and Priscilla were mentioned along with the Church that is in their house, so naturally Priscilla was exercising her gift in the Church but in subjection under her husband in Christ. This is a classical example of a ministry couple working together hand in hand effectively for the extension of His Kingdom (Acts 18:24-26; 1 Peter 3:1-6).

c) This is a classical example of a family serving God. The apostle Paul Greets the same couple in reverse order [i.e. Prisca and then Aquila] in 2 Tim 4:19. This shows that when working for God both are equal before God, but in exercising authority over men the Divine order should be followed. This Divine order is what Paul was concerned to implement in the Churches. Some women may be more gifted in a area than their husbands as in the case of Prisca who is more noticeable than her husband Aquila, that does not mean that woman can exercise authority [i.e. to make men accountable for their behavior and discipline them when it is wrong (1 Cor 13:10)] over men.

d) God does choose some ladies to lead the Church and it is not an absolute impossibility, but this does not usually happen every time and every place or even equally with men but rarely. “To the elect or chosen lady [The Elder or Leader] and her children…” (2 John 1:1). We can see from the above verse that the elect lady was a married lady with children and is an elderly woman and is not a novice. The very fact that Apostle John was writing this letter to instruct her shows that she too was under the apostolic authority of John the Apostle.

Women who played important roles in the Old Testament

To have a clear understanding about women who played important roles in the Old Testament, we should first understand in the context of God’s creation, for what role God has created women when Eve the first woman came in to existence. The word ‘woman’ when it is divided, can be explained as Womb + Man -> Woman. Womb is the part of female’s body where her baby grows before it is born. Man means spirit being or living soul (Gen 2:17). Thus we can safely say that a Woman is a living soul with a Womb.

So only when God brought the brand new Eve to Adam, Adam said: “…She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Thus Adam named her as Woman (Gen 2:23). And also Adam called his wife’s name Eve [life or living], because she was the mother of all living (3:20). Woman -> Wo [mb] + man, which also means Womb that produces more living beings. A Woman is the one who was taken out of the Womb [i.e. abdomen region] of Man (2:21, 22).

What is the primary reason that God created Woman? What were the thoughts that went through God’s mind about her?

God thought that it is not good for man to be alone, this was the reason God decided to make him [Adam] a helper comparable to him (v18). In what way a helper comparable to Adam, if we ask ourselves? Adam himself gives the answer by saying, “This [Woman] is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh…” (v23). In other words Adam was saying because God has taken her out of my rib bone and closed up the flesh in its place (v21), she is part of my bones and with that bone joined to my bones I will be complete and she is also the one who represents the flesh that is taken out of my flesh that which is substituted in that area out of which the rib is taken out. So man becomes complete only when he lives with a woman and is committed to her. And he is dependant on her (1 Cor 11:11). Woman is the glory of man (v7), which means that woman is built up by God to act under the authority structure of a man where she will be made complete and will act as the most effective agent of completeness. A woman will find fulfillment of life’s goodness only when she is connected to a man or relates herself to a man [i.e. her husband].

Then this question may come to our mind, what about man? Is he also under any authority structure?

Man’s dynamics is that he is the image and the glory of God (v7). Man will find his fulfillment on earth only when he relates himself to God or when he is connected to God and is guided by God. Even angels both good and bad are watching keenly whether this structure of God appointed authority is kept or not. If it is not kept, the same thing that happened to Eve will again happen by demonic intrusion in to their lives. This is why God hates divorce and loves family structure to be rock solid (Malachi 2:11, 14-16).

So only we can say, when Eve was tempted by the serpent [Satan], if she would only have had covered her head [i.e. if she had realized she was under Adam’s authority] and if she would have had consulted Adam and Adam in turn if he would have had replied to Satan, “I am under God’s authority, so you better speak to Him before you speak to me,” the fall of man would have been averted. This is the reason the Bible says that woman ought to have a symbol of authority over her, because of the angels (1 Cor 11:10). After the fall of man has happened, God did not ask Eve “Where are you?”, but He asked Adam “Where are you?” as a Head who is accountable to God (Gen 3:9, 10). It was Adam’s responsibility to have informed God when Eve brought the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil for him to eat, instead he heeded the voice of her and ate with out any second thought (2 Cor 11:3; Gen 3:17). The same thing happened also in the life of Abraham when he heeded the voice of Sarai and did not even ask God about it and he got the whole of his family in to trouble and heart break (Genesis 16:1-4). This shows that by creation Adam was created as the head of the woman (Eph 5:23; Genesis 18:19).

Satan loves to break the family authority structure, if he is again given an entry by any woman who breaks the structure God has designed. So only a woman ought to realize that she is under authority and should submit to her husband unconditionally (Eph 5:22; 1 Cor 7:4; 1 Peter 3:1-6). By doing this, even an unbelieving husband may be won to the Lord by the chaste conduct of the believing wife. This is not a custom to be followed or a tradition to keep, but it is a structure that should be maintained and practiced as appointed by God (1 Cor 11:16).

a) In the Old Testament, one of the greatest example of submission and gentleness was Sarah. Sarah called Abraham as ‘Lord’ and she always did as directed by Abraham, even at the cost of her own life and security, and God honored her by protecting her from all the dangers she faced (1 Peter 3:6; Genesis 12:17; 20:3, 6). The Holy women will always adorn themselves by being submissive to their own husbands, in that way they will show that they trust in God and His appointed authority structure that He had placed over them.

b) In the Old Testament the woman’s role was specified to be a Helper [the same word used for Helper the Holy Spirit in the New Testament (Gen 2:18-John14:26)]. A Helper is the one who helps another person in their work.

I. If we ask the question, Can a helper command or rule over the one whom she is under? The answer is no. But because of a good relationship with the one to whom they are helping, they can suggest good things if the person over them wants their suggestion. Helper is a constructive role and not a commanding role (Genesis 21:12; 16:2, 5).

II. A Helper will not overrule the decision taken by the authority over them even if it is wrong (Gen 12:10-16).

III. A Helper will always be submissive and will always be an encourager if it is a good thing but the Helper does have the right to be quiet and to express her emotions if a decision is wrong (Eph 4:30; Gen 21:9-12 ).

IV. A Helper will always have the right to say that something is right or wrong and what will be its consequences (John 16:8-11; 1 Samuel 25:36-38; Acts 5:1-2).

V. A Helper will always comfort the one to whom they are helping, irrespective of whether something they have done is a mistake or not on their part (Gen 24:67; 2 Cor 1:3, 4).

c) Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron led the women of Israel to praise and worship the Lord with song, music and dance, but the one who exercised authority over men was Moses. Miriam was a leader for women and she displayed her gift wonderfully that which God has given her. When Miriam dissented and criticized against Moses along with Aaron because Moses had married a woman who was of Ham’s descendant. God was not pleased with her and was angry; as a result of it she became a leper. God forgave her because she repented and Moses interceded with God (Num 12).

d) Even though Rehab was a harlot when she lived in Jericho, she believed God and helped the spies, not fearing about her own life. Because she received the spies with peace (Heb 11:31), her decision saved her whole family. She was not married at that time, after she was saved, she married Salmon who begot Boaz (Matthew 1:5), thus coming in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

e) Deborah was a prophetess and she was judging Israel at that time period in the Old Testament. But still the Bible describes her as the wife of Lapidoth, means that she was under her husband’s authority. Though the children of Israel came up to her for Judgment, still in a family setting she was submissive to her husband. This is absolutely a great example (Judges 4:4). When God spoke to Barak to go to war, Barak wanted Deborah to come along with them to fight the enemies.

But she advises Barak to go alone because he will have no glory (Judges 4:9). Here also we see how clearly Deborah understood about God’s authority structure. So only she advised Barak that the Lord will sell the commander and his army in to the hand of a woman and she did not like that to happen, and she wanted Barak to receive the glory of victory that God is going to give. What a submissive woman she was to Divine order! So only God used her!
She went to war only as a prophetic guide and spiritual support to Barak. And God worked with Barak and routed the enemies (Judges 4:9, 10). The whole army was under Barak’s command (Judges 4:15-16). God gave victory to the whole country through Barak, under the prophetic guidance of Deborah.

f) Huldah was a prophetess during the time of king Josiah’s reign in Judah. Here also the Bible introduces her as the wife of Shallum. The king received God’s guidance through her (2 Kings 22:14, 15). Again here we see Huldah’s submissiveness to God’s authority structure by being submissive to her husband. This also shows that God may use women in leadership position sometimes, but still under a man not independently (2 Chronicles 34:22).

g) Prophet Isaiah himself married a prophetess which shows that they [women] also were recognized as givers of Divine counsel to the people, yet with in the Divine order (Isaiah 8:3). Only when this Divine order was broken and disregarded, God was concerned about it because of angels (Isaiah 3:12; 1 Cor 11:10). Once Divine order is broken Satan and his demons can have a free reign in the life and activity of a family, village, town and even nation (Genesis 3:6, 9-12; 16:2, 5-6). When women do not regard Divine authority structure that God has set and if they take leadership positions, a deceitful controlling spirit will take control of them and throw whole thing in to chaos and lawlessness in that place. They will become direct instruments in the hands of Satan and his fallen angels (1 Kings 19:1-2; 21:5-16, 20, 23, 25-26; Neh 6:14).

h) Another wonderful example of a prophetess is Anna of whom the Bible says “And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; And she [was] a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served [God] with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36-38). This shows how she had been married and had been under Divine authority structure before she became a full time prophetess. God, who had seen her wonderful heart of submission, has used her powerfully in prophetic utterance in regarding to the Messiah and His salvation (1 Peter 3:1, 4-5).

i) There were female prophetess in the Old Testament, but there were no female priests who taught and ruled the people in the way of the Lord (Deut 21:5; Jer 5: 31; 6: 13; 31:34; Micah 3:11; Lev 21:7), because the qualification for a priest is gender dependant [i.e. male of the tribe of Levi] and this is equal to the fivefold ministry gifts in the New Testament (Eph 4:11-12; 1 Tim 1:1-13; Titus 1:5-9).

Where Does women stand in the New Testament?

1) In the Church meetings, women are expected to be silent and submissive. It is shameful for women to speak in Church (1 Cor 14:34-35). Here Apostle Paul was speaking about authority and Divine order in the Church. He is not speaking about women exercising their God given gifts in the Church, but he is speaking in the context of exercising Divine authority over people. How do we know that? Because Paul in the preceding verses was dealing about confusion that happened in the Corinthian Church because people were prophesying with out any order and if he meant these verses in the current wrong interpretation of women should never speak in the Church at all, My question to them is, why Paul in the same book of 1 Cor11:4-5 is saying “Every man praying or prophesying, having [his] head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with [her] head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.” Here he is saying about men and women prophesying in the Church and the only Divine order that differentiates between them is woman should prophecy with her head covered [i.e. under authority of the appointed overseer of the Church and her husband]. The reason Apostle Paul told the women community of the Body of Christ not to speak in the Church is because he strongly discouraged them to speak about any doctrinal disputes and dissension in the Church which are set by the Apostles and Overseers, called and appointed by God (1 Tim 4:11-14; (2 Tim 4:3-4 -> Titus 3:9-11)). So only in the next verse in 1 Cor 14:35, Paul says, ‘if woman want to learn something [doctrines or teaching] which is very disputable or that which may cause dissension in the Church, let them ask their own husbands at home.’

2) In the same context he also speaks in 1 Tim 2:11-12,
“Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not [do not permit] a woman to teach, nor to usurp [exercise] authority over the man, but to be in silence.”

3) Paul says in 1 Tim 2:13-15, “For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.” Here he is again referring to the authority structure that God had set forth at the time of creation as the standard that need to be looked in to, and the perfect example to be followed in order to be blessed like in the garden of Eden and is referring to the curses that came upon Eve as a result of breaking God’s structure of authority because of Eve’s disobedience first, and then Adam (Genesis 3:13, 16). But Paul says that women will be delivered from curses in child bearing [i.e. labor pain curses will be revoked and good equality in friendship with the husband will happen as a helper], if they [women] continue in faith, love and holiness, with self-control. This also means in other words that women will be delivered from the deceptive scheming of Satan that will bring curse in to their lives, if she comes under the authority structure of the God ordained husband. The family unit walking in faith, love and holiness with self-control is the greatest threat to the kingdom to Satan and his kingdom of deception.

4) The one main first qualification for a Elder who exercises authority in a church is clearly described in Titus 1:6, “If a man [note: not woman] is blameless, the husband [note: not wife] of one wife [not one husband], having faithful children [i.e. having good authority structure in the family]…..”
Also in 1 Tim 3:1, 2 the qualification for a bishop is literally given
“If any man [note: not woman] desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.”
God’s divine authority structure is “that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God” (1 Cor 11:3).
As woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things [whether man or woman] are from God (1 Cor 11:12). All authority is from God.

5) For “A bishop then [secondary qualification] must be blameless, the husband [note: the requirement is male] of one wife….” (1 Tim 3:2). Here also the overseer authority is gender specific clearly in the word of God.

6) “So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.” (Eph 5:28), because he will be complete only when his bones are all fixed in place and flesh covers it. Let the wives be subject to their own husbands in everything [not only in few areas]. This is why Apostle Paul himself questioned the Corinthian believers in 1 Cor 9:5, “Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, [as] the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?”. In other words he was telling that all the apostles took their believing wife along with them where ever they went to do ministry, this is the best and a strong foundation for Joyful ministry but they [i.e. Paul and Barnabas] were denying it because of their intense extraordinary zeal (1 Cor 9:6). Paul did not marry because of his own decision to do the ministry without distraction (1 Cor 7:35). This is why Paul was not sure about what he was saying and said “… I think I also have the Spirit of God [regarding this suggestion of marriage] and has given it as only a suggestion not a command (1 Cor 7:25-26; 40). Even for Paul it was God’s will to get married and do ministry, so only he says, do I have no right to get married (1 Cor 9:5). In other words, he was saying I do have the rights to marry because it is the will of God for every one.

Christology of Jesus

Christology of Jesus

Christology is a field of study within Christian theology which is concerned with the nature of Jesus the Christ, particularly with how the divine and human are related in his person. Christology is generally less concerned with the details of Jesus’ life than with how the human and divine co-exist in one person. Although this study of the inter-relationship of these two natures is the foundation of Christology, some essential sub-topics within the field of Christology include:

the Incarnation,


the resurrection,


and the salvific work of Jesus (known as soteriology).


Christology is related to questions concerning the nature of God like the Trinity, Unitarianism or Binitarianism. However, from a Christian perspective, these questions are concerned with how the divine persons relate to one another, whereas Christology is concerned with the meeting of the human and divine in the person of Jesus.


Throughout the history of Christianity, Christological questions have been very important in the life of the church. Christology was a fundamental concern from the First Council of Nicaea (325) until the Third Council of Constantinople (680). In this time period, the Christological views of various groups within the broader Christian community led to accusations of heresy, and, infrequently, subsequent religious persecution. In some cases, a sect’s unique Christology is its chief distinctive feature; in these cases it is common for the sect to be known by the name given to its Christology.


Work of Christ

The Offices of Christ: “Prophet, Priest, and King”


Jesus Christ, the Mediator of humankind, fulfills the three offices of Prophet, Priest, and King. Eusebius of the early church worked out this threefold classification, which John Calvin developed and John Wesley discussed.

Prophet


Christ is the mouthpiece of God as the Prophet, speaking and teaching the Word of God, infinitely greater than all prophets, who spoke for God and interpreted the will of God. The Old Testament prophet brought God’s message to the people. Christ, as the Word (John 1:1-18)/Logos is the Source of revelation. Accordingly, Jesus Christ never used the messenger formula, which linked the prophet’s words to God in the prophetic phrase, Thus says the Lord. Christ, being of the same nature, provides a definitive and true exposition of God.
The Word/Logos is Light. As the true Light (John 1:1-18), Jesus Christ exclusively enlightens humankind in the office of Prophet. Jesus affirmed his divine identity and ultimate authority, revealing God to humanity, continuing His work into the future as the Light (Revelation 22:3).



The Bible refers about the Prophetic nature of Jesus Christ in the following verses:
John 17:4 “I have glorified thee on earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”
John 14:24 “These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”
Act 2:22 “Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, A man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know.”
Mark 6:4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
Luke 4:43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.


Priest


Christ, whom we draw near to in confidence, offered Himself as the sacrifice to humanity as High Priest (Hebrews 4:14). Old Testament priests declared the will of God, gave the covenant of blessing, and directed the processing of sacrifices. The priest represented humankind before God. While humankind took the office of priesthood in their weakness, Jesus holds the position with an indestructible power that overcomes the weakness of humanity as described throughout the book of Hebrews. As High Priest, Christ became one with humanity in human weakness, offered prayers to God, chose obedience through suffering, and sympathized with the struggles of humanity.


The atoning death of Christ is at the heart of His work as High Priest. Metaphors are used to describe His death on the cross, such as, “Christ, the Lamb of God, shed His blood on the cross as the sin offering for humankind.” Christ made one sin offering as High Priest in contrast to the Old Testament priests who continually offered sacrifices on behalf of humanity. Because of the work of Christ on the cross, humanity has the opportunity to have a living relationship with God. Conversely, the individuals that deny the work of God are described as dead in sin, without God and without hope.


King


Christ, exalted High Priest, mediates the sin that estranges humankind from the fellowship of God. In turn, He has full rights to reign over the church and world as King. Christ sits at the right hand of God, crowned in glory as “King of kings and Lord of lords.” God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church.


Did Jesus have Christology?

Yes, Jesus did have Christology. We can easily know this fact from the question Jesus Himself asked the Pharisees when they gathered together to test Him, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”. The Pharisees answered, “The Son of David” (Matt 22:41-42). They answered like this because they thought that the messiah who will come to redeem Israel from Romans will be born in the line of David according to their understanding of Scripture showing their ignorance of the virgin birth of the Messiah. They thought according to the flesh and of course they were partially correct.

Then Jesus asked them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’. If then David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?”. They were not able to answer this question. Nor anybody dared to ask Him any question from that day (Matt 22:43-46).

Jesus asked them and reasoned with them wonderfully by asking them “If David called Him Lord [Covenant Name of Jehovah], how is then He the son of David”. Here Jesus beautifully picturised His incarnation and His pre-existence simply by reasoning through a single Scripture. He Himself gave the answer that Messiah is nobody other than the Son of God who became the Son of Man (Ps 8:5).

In another verse in Mark 14:61, 62, the High Priest asked Him directly, “Are you the Christ, the son of the Blessed?”. Jesus replied, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” This is the most direct and the most beautiful answer anybody can get and that too from Christ Himself.

Here Jesus said “I am”. This is the Name that was revealed to Moses when he took the Israelites our of Egypt. When he asked God what should he call His name as and speak to the Israelites as their God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. He said “Iam that [who] Iam”. This proves that Christ has a solid Christology base to His claim.

This truth when accepted has the potential to change your life,

(i) If we have by faith, the Son of God in our life by inviting Him in to our heart, we have life [Zoe - God’s life] (1 John 5:12). We need to continue believing that Jesus is the Son of God.

(ii) We can be free from condemnation because we have peace with God (Rom 8:1; 5:1).

(iii) Every one can check themselves and others by confessing and making other’s confess that Jesus has come in the flesh as the Son of God, whether they are really guided by the Holy Spirit or not (1 John 4:2). The term ‘Son of God’ refers to Jesus’ virgin birth, sinless life, death and resurrection for every one of us and hence conveys the message that He has come in the flesh.

(iv) We don’t have to worry about dying, and we can be free from the fear of death because if the Son sets us free, we are free indeed (Heb 2:14, 15; John 8:36).

(v) We can experience abundant life in every area of our life (John 10:10; 1 John 5:12, 13).


We learn clearly the divinity of Christ [deity] and the humanity of Jesus in the synoptic Gospel.


Synoptic Gospels -

In the Christian Bible, in the part known as the New Testament, the first four books are known as the gospels, while the first three of these, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, are so similar that they are sometimes referred to as the synoptic gospels (from Greek, συν, syn, together, and όπσις, opsis, seeing). These gospels often recount the same stories about Jesus, generally follow the same sequence and, often use the same or similar wording. The hows and whys of these books similarities and differences to each other and to other gospels is known as the synoptic problem. The synoptic gospels are also often contrasted with the Gospel according to John. The term synoptic comes from Greek and means “seeing with the same eyes”, but was coined specifically to deal with analyzing and understanding the similarities and differences between the first three gospels.

The synoptic gospels all tell the story of Jesus, proclaiming him the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Messiah (Christ), the judge of the future apocalypse. The synoptic gospels start either with Jesus’ birth or his baptism and conclude with the empty tomb and resurrection appearances, though some texts of Mark end at the empty tomb (see Mark 16). In these gospels, Jesus cures diseases, exorcises demons, forgives sins, displays dominion over nature, knows the secret thoughts and past of others, speaks “with authority,” calls God his own Father and says that the Father had handed over to him “all things.”

The divinity of Christ can be classified in to four main categories,

(i) Pre-existence of Christ


(ii) His Eternality


(iii) His Human Nature


(iv) His Divine Nature

Pre-existence of Christ

In the Gospel of Mark, when Jesus was asked the question, “Are you the Son of the Blessed,” He replied, “I am” (Mark 14:61, 62). This is the covenant name of Jehovah God. This proves His Pre-existence in His own words.


Eternality


In Isaiah 9:6, God prophesied about the first coming of Jesus by saying, “… a child is born …a Son is given…”. Here we can see the unique eternality of Jesus by knowing that only the child was born [the Son was not born] but the Son was given. If we ask ourself from where? The answer is from heaven (John 6:41-42). This proves to us that Jesus was God’s Eternal Son. In other words He himself is God who inhabited the eternity past, and is inhabiting the present and will inhabit in the future (John 5:18). Actually Luke refers to this scripture in the synoptic Gospel as the Holy Spirit has inspired Him to refer it. Thus it clearly shows us that He was born as a child on earth, but was actually a Son from heaven.

His Human Nature (The Son of Man)

Mostly this is the title by which Jesus referred Himself most of the time when speaking to others, hence describing about His perfect Humanity. This was title given by the Israelites uniquely only to describe the Messiah. And He used the title often. The Son of Man means simply “man” as in Psalm 8:4-8; Matthew 9:4-6, 8.

In Mark 14:62, He is referred to as in the context of a Heavenly figure. It also refers to His power and authority as fully man who is given power and authority by God in other different context (Mark 2:10, 28; Luke 12:19).

In other areas of the gospels, it is referred in the context of His pre-existence and His descent in to this world by Humility and the evidence of His glory in the gospels. In certain other areas, it is referred about His future second coming and how He will hold the Messianic feast. The synoptic as a whole gives an awesome and accurate understanding about His pre-existence and His humanity. The synoptic speaks about all the miracles that Christ did as a perfect man during His earthly ministry. This He did through the anointing that was upon Him as a evidence that He was sent by God from Heaven (Acts 10:38; Heb 2:3, 4; John 5:36; 14:11). This is still the true evidence that proves that He is what He says about himself. Praise the Lord!

His Divine Nature (The Son of God)

This title by which Jesus called Himself was to show to the people that He was still the perfect God, even though He became a perfect man (John 5:18; 6:41, 42; 8:56-59; 19:7). Jesus and the Father are one in essence [Divine character] (John 14:9). The trinity as a whole is one in essence, but three in person. Jesus is the second person in the trinity. Next to the Father, but Co-equal.

Jesus revealed the character of God to man. In the synoptics Jesus many a times affirms His Divine Nature by asking this question to the Pharisees who wanted to accuse Him falsely by asking them, “Which of you convicts Me of sin?” (John 8:46). In fact nobody can because of His Divine character. This shows the purity of His Nature and the perfect life that He lived as a man which has been clearly and accurately described in the synoptics by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!

Christ our Example

In Philippians 2:5-11 we can see how Christ humbled Himself to the cross and from there how God exalted Him to the throne. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Jesus Christ “(v5). Here “this mind” refers to the state of Jesus’ mind. In Matt 11:29, Jesus Himself spoke about His own state of mind by saying, “….learn from Me, for I am gentle [meek] and lowly in heart”. In fact, we cannot even comprehend with our finite mind, how much He must have humbled Himself to be gentle [meek] and lowly in heart. It is very hard to imagine ‘How the prince of heaven and the darling of heaven who ruled over all the universe could have humbled Himself to become a servant to all mankind’.

The Bible says, [Christ] who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery [or something to be held on to be equal] to be equal with God”. He was exactly the same in essence of God’s Glory [Glory- Majesty, Holiness, power, perfection and Might]. In other words, He had the right to say to the Father God, ‘You go to the earth to die on the cross’, when God the Father sent Him to the planet earth. Instead He voluntarily came forward to give Himself to fulfill the mission of redemption (John 10:17-18; 5:26; 8:14).

Jesus “made Himself of no reputation [emptied Himself of His privileges]” (v7). He chose not to exercise His authority as God and this was the pact that He made with the Father and obeyed His word by “taking the form of a bondservant”. Bond servant has no privileges at all. He will need to do whatever the owner says him to do. He has no right of his own. It is the lowest form of servanthood. He is required to do washing of people’s feet. This servant will not be paid any wages unless the owner who owns him chooses to reward him for his outstanding work.

Inspite of knowing all these things, He chose to take the form of a bondservant, because of His love for us (John 15:9) and [came] …in the likeness of men”. And this likeness is the physical form of man [i.e. physical body with hands, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and senses], not only in appearance but with all the physical limitation of being in the body. Jesus created us in His likeness [i.e. spiritual likeness] and becase of His love for us humans, He became to be in the likeness [i.e. Physical likeness with all its limitations] of men. Oh what a love!

Even before the foundation of the world this was planned by the trinity (Heb 4:3), when they had discussed and planned it in the ages past. When the Father God had told Him about the plan of redemption, Jesus volunteered and must have told the Holy Spirit that He must take Him and place Him inside the womb of Mary, so that He can use Him in the ministry by filling Him and then taking him to the cross to be sacrificed for the sin of humanity. The Bible confirms this in Heb 9:14 by saying, “how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot [or blemish] to God…” (Heb 9:14).

When this redemptive operation was executed by the trinity, Christ found Himself in appearance as a man as the Bible says, “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself…” (v8). This was truly a humbling experience for the God who gives breath to all human beings and sustains it, to end up being one among them. To humble one’s self is to have a low social class or position. To humble one’s self is to stay simple inspite of having power to use or exercise. He still had authority, but He chose not to use it or else the plan of salvation would be aborted. That’s why when one of His disciple struck the ear of the servant of the High priest who came to arrest Him, Jesus said to His disciple “Put your sword in its place….do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels [80,000 angels]? How then could the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?” (Matt 26:51-54).

This clearly shows that Jesus knew this will happen and that He was waiting for each things to take place so that the will of the Father God will be fulfilled, with out even failing in the smallest details. If he would have called the angels he would have broken the perfect will of the Father God and He would have acted independently. This would have been an act of disobedience and the whole plan of salvation would be aborted as a result. This is why Satan also tried to break His perfect obedience to the Father’s will in the wilderness by trying to make Him act independently (Matt 4:1-11).

The Bible says that Jesus “…became obedient to the point of death…” (v8). When Jesus did His miracles, signs and wonders during His 3 ½ years of ministry, many tried to kill Him. He knew that this was a risk that He was taking, but still He continued in the perfect will of God and thus became obedient [i.e. He learned obedience through suffering]. He trained His soul to be always obedient to the will of the Father.

This is the reason Jesus said to His disciples, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death…” (Matthew 26:38). This is the highest point of His obedience because He was going through very High emotional, mental tormentation because He knew that He would be cut off from the trinity for a while as a result of the sin of the whole world and was going to die physically by being brutalized to death. This is the only place Jesus ever prayed, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, your will be done” (Matt 26:42). In other words He was saying, ‘If there is no other way to achieve salvation except by dying like this, then let me do it your way itself’. Even before dying on the cross, He died to His flesh [i.e. His independent will apart from God]. He aligned His will to the will of the Father after He prayed like this. This is the only place He ever struggled to die to His will but submitted His will as a bond servant in the end.

Jesus submitted Himself to “….even the death of the cross” (v8). Then the actual death of the cross happened, where the perfect will of the Father was fulfilled. This was the ultimate point where Jesus was forsaken for a moment and died a vicarious death. This was the lowest point in His life where He did not even have the right to call God as His Father but He called Him as, “My God, My God, Why have you forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).

And the Glory that Jesus had with the Father is the “…form of God.” (Phil 2:6). And in John 17:4, 5 at the hour just before crucifixion He prayed, “…I have finished the work which you have given me to do.” After His crucifixion when He was about to give up His spirit He said, “It is finished.” In other words all that the Father required for the salvation of humanity was achieved through His perfect life of obedience to the Father at that point of time. So He ultimately fulfilled and finished the plan of salvation to fruition. Jesus while praying for Himself prayed in John 17:5, “And now, O Father, glorify Me together [alongside] with yourself, with the glory which I had with you before the world was.” The day the trinity planned, Jesus worked along with humanity to fulfill salvation mission. So after fulfilling the mission, Jesus prays to the Father to glorify Him alongside the Father, like which He was in the eternity past before the world was. Hallelujah! Now he is seated at the right hand of the Father like before the world was created.
